MAE Passenger Traffic

In 2017, the airport handled a record 27.8 million passengers, due to this fact, the airport currently undergoes an expansion program to expand twice the size of Terminal 2. The first elements of this program were opened in 2019. However, the full expansion will be done in 2024, and this will allow Terminal 2 to handle more than 35 million passengers. Capacity will be expanded as well, nowadays, the airport can handle 50 million passengers annually with two runways, even though 61 aircraft movements per hour restrict the capacity. Besides the aircraft operations, terminal sizes will not allow for processing arrivals and departures properly.

The Capacity and Business Activity

A passenger can find two parallel runways at Manchester Airport. Runway 1 (23R/05L) is 3,048 m x 45m (10,000 ft x 148 ft), as for Runway 2 (23L/05R) is 3,200 m x 45 m (10,499 ft x 148 ft). The distance from them is 390 m (1,280 ft), and due to this possibility to conduct flights on both of them occurs. While takeoffs are done on the runway, on the other landing can be done independently.

MAN Runway

The original, as well as the main runway, was designated 06/24, the length must be 3,300 ft (1,006 m), and it was opened on 17 May 1937. At this time, the airport was an RAF base, as well as a military aircraft assembly center. There were development stages of this runway from 1952. However, it reached the current length in 1981. After 1981, it became able to attract international long-haul traffic. In the mid-1990s, demand from passengers, as well as aircraft movements increased, and the airport began to establish a second full-length runway. In 1997, the planning permission was given by the government, and construction began the same year.

The second runway was designated as 06/24L, and it started working on 5 February 2001. It was the first full-length runway, which was commercial, to be opened in the United Kingdom for over 20 years. The site where the construction began was on the southern boundary, which is close to the village of Styal, Cheshire Countryside. This project was controversial, as for natural wildlife habitats, it might be harmful. However, as there were some estimations about this damage, the authorities were enabled to conduct flights.

History and Present-day Operations

The airport was constructed on 28 November 1935. However, it was opened in June 1937. Its northern border was between Firtree Farm and the Grange, which marked "Ringway." The full working of the airport started on 25 June 1938. As for the period during World War II, the airport was used as an essential military aircraft production center, as well as a training point for parachutists. After the war ended, the base became a civilian airport as it was at first, and it was expanded to its present size. Following the war, the airport was the busiest in the United Kingdom after Heathrow airport.

In 1972, the opening of the M56 motorway happened, and in 1993 Manchester Airport station was opened as well. From 1997 till 2011, the building of the second runway occurred.
