History

The history of Stewart International Airport goes back to 1930 when an aviation enthusiast Thomas Stewart convinced his uncle to donate the land to the city of Newburgh to build an airport. Due to the Depression, the town didn't have enough money for it, so things didn't go as planned.

In 1934, The city sold the land for one dollar to the military academy, and the place became the cadets' training center. During the second world war, the army airfield was transformed into the air force base and stayed this way until 1970.

After the airport became public again in the early 1980s, several passenger and cargo airlines started operating flights, such as Allegiant Air, American Eagle, Delta Connection, JetBlue, and so on. Cargo airlines include FedEx Express, UPS Airlines, and Kalitta Air.

Capacity

Stewart International Airport is spanned on 1552 acres, and at an elevation, the airport is on 491 feet above sea level. The airport has two runways, and both covered in asphalt surface and a helipad. The Helipad is also asphalt, and it is 40X40 feet. One of the runways is 11,817 feet long and 6,004 feet in length.

According to the statistics provided by the Federal Aviation Administration, for the year of 2017, the airport had 47,081 aircraft operations in total and approximately 129 operations per day. In 2018, there were 85 based aircraft at Stewart International Airport, including five single-engine, three multi-engine, 43 jets, seven helicopters, and 27 militaries. The total number of domestic passengers using the airport in 2018 was 321,000.
