Sudbury Airport (ICAO: CYSB, IATA: YSB), also known as a more magnificent Sudbury Airport, is a public airport located in the Canadian City of Greater Sudbury, Ontario. It is situated 11 miles northwest of the downtown area, between the communities of Garson and Skead, on Municipal Road. YSB Airport uses the name Greater Sudbury Airport, and it is the official name as registered with Transport Canada. But it is simply called Sudbury Airport.

YSB Airport uses the name Greater Sudbury Airport, and it is the official name as registered with Transport Canada. But it is simply called Sudbury Airport.

Sudbury Airport serves Greater Sudbury, Ontario, and the operator of the YSB airport is Municipality of Sudbury. The Sudbury airport is classified as an airport of entry by Nav Canada, and it is served by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). Currently, CBSA officers can handle only general aviation aircraft with more than 15 passengers.

Sudbury Airport served over 286, 260 passengers in 2018.

History

The history of Sudbury airport began in 1952 when the airport began as an emergency landing facility with a single 6,600 feet landing strip from CFB North Bay. In 1953, the Sudbury Airport Committee arranged commercial flights to Sudbury. The terminal building construction and a second landing strip completed in 1955. From that time, regular commercial air service began by Trans Canada Air Lines. In 1973, the YSB airport terminal building was replaced with a larger one, it was renovated and added the air traffic control tower. Until 2000, the Sudbury Airport was operated by the transportation department of Sudbury and owned by the Federal Government.

Later, the YSB airport ownership transferred to the Sudbury Airport Community Development Corporation. Sunwing Airlines offered direct flights to Varadero from Sudbury airport in 2005, in the following years, other destinations were added. Today, Sudbury airport operated 24 hours as a flight service station.
